The Setup
Yo, what's up everybody! It's your girl Katrina, comin' at you from behind the bar in Manhattan. Today I'm gonna share one of my all-time favorite recipes — and trust me, this one's got a story behind it.
So picture this: It's a Tuesday night, the bar's packed with suits fresh off Wall Street, and this guy walks in looking like he just saw a ghost. I'm talking pale, sweaty palms, the whole deal.
He slides onto a stool and I can tell immediately — this isn't a "rough day at work" kind of nervous. This is something bigger.
"Sweetie, you look like you need something strong. What's going on?"
Turns out he's about to propose to his girlfriend at dinner — like, in 20 minutes — and he's absolutely losing it.
The Moment
Now, I've seen a lot of things behind this bar. First dates, breakups, promotions, firings. But there's something special about someone on the edge of changing their whole life.
He pulls out the ring. Beautiful. Classic. The kind of ring that says "I put thought into this."
"I've had this for three months. I keep chickening out. What if she says no? What if I ruin everything?"
I grabbed my mixing glass. "Sit down, sweetie. I got you."
The Drink
I made him what I call Liquid Courage. It's my riff on a classic Manhattan — smooth, sophisticated, with just enough warmth to quiet the voices in your head telling you that you can't do this.
Bourbon for backbone. Sweet vermouth for smoothness. A little bitters to keep it interesting. The kind of drink that makes you sit up a little straighter.
I set it in front of him. He took one sip. Then another. And I watched his whole energy shift.
"Yo, I can do this."
And guess what? She said yes.
The Anniversary
They still come in. Every year. Same stools. Same drinks. And every time, he tells the story to whoever's sitting next to them.
"This bartender saved my life that night. I was about to walk out and never ask her."
That's the power of a good drink at the right moment. It's not about the alcohol — it's about the ritual. Taking a breath. Holding something solid. Giving yourself permission to be brave.
🥃 Liquid Courage
The drink that gets you through anything
- 2 oz Bourbon (I like Buffalo Trace)
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- 1 dash Orange Bitters
- Orange peel for garnish
- 1 Luxardo cherry
How to make it:
- Chill your glass — Put a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer while you prep. Cold glass = game changer.
- Combine and stir — In a mixing glass with ice, add your bourbon, sweet vermouth, and both bitters. Stir for about 30 seconds. Don't shake it — we ain't making a milkshake here.
- Strain — Pour into your chilled glass. Use a fine strainer if you're fancy.
- Garnish like you mean it — Express that orange peel over the drink (squeeze it to release the oils), give the rim a little rub, then drop it in. Add your cherry.
- Take a breath and sip — This drink is meant to be savored, not slammed.
Pro Tips from the Bar
Don't cheap out on the bourbon. You don't need to spend $50, but don't grab the plastic bottle either. Mid-shelf is perfect.
Make your own cherries. Luxardo jars cost like $20, but you can make your own for way less. Recipe coming soon!
The stir matters. 30 seconds, nice and smooth. Over-stirring makes it watery. Under-stirring and it's too boozy.
When to Serve This
Before a big date. Before a job interview (okay maybe wait until after...). When your friend needs a pep talk. Anytime you need to channel your inner main character energy.
This cocktail isn't just a drink — it's a ritual. It's you taking a moment before doing something brave. Whether you're asking for that raise, finally texting them back, or just trying to get through a Wednesday, Liquid Courage has your back.
